De Consolatione Philosophiae (The Consolation of Philosophy) is a philosophical work by Boethius, written in Latin, probably around 524 AD. It has been described as the single most important and influential work in the West on medieval and early Renaissance Christianity, but is also a starting point for later philosophers like Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The text presents a conversation between Boethius and Lady Philosophy, where Boethius laments his unjust imprisonment and exile. Lady Philosophy appears to him and argues that true happiness comes not from external goods like wealth and power, but from virtue and understanding God. She leads him through a discussion of free will, fate, and the nature of good and evil, ultimately consoling him with the idea that even in the face of suffering, one can find inner peace through philosophy and faith. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
